The dreaded single supplement isn't new. If you travel by yourself, and stay in a room or cabin meant for two, you'd expect to pay a little more. But lately, it seems, travel companies have come to see singles as suckers.

Have you felt the financial pinch from traveling solo? Do you have any advice for avoiding single supplements? Do you have an example of a particularly egrigious fee? Join the discussion.
i have never paid those kind of rates and have never been charged double. maybe you should reconsider what your plans are or use another resource. if you are taken like that, it is partly your own fault.
I don't think you can be a solo traveler these days and not feel the financial pinch. I don't have any egregious horror stories to tell, but that's mainly because I avoid travel where I know I'm overpaying by too much.
I'm really starting to think the only way solos can protect our rights and avoid being ripped off is to organize as an association to lobby the travel industry. As individuals, we have no leverage with travel companies, lodging establishments, etc., but as a group, there are millions of us. If millions decide to boycot Company X because they are known to rip off solo travelers, that's leverage.
There needs to be a tee up system just like in golfing. You call and team up with someone going to
the same place you are, staying in the same place, and getting the benefits as "dual occupant". The
Hotels in Las Vegas are virtually booking their rooms for maximum occupancy. So, what would be
the added cost, nothing, they just need to tee you up with some one in equal manner and status. By
being cleared as a traveling member with membership like at the golf course, maybe price-line or
expedia.com could devise a system catering to single customers. Even Club Med could help in setting
up the very system your doing on Cruise lines anyway. They team up perfect strangers sharing the same berth and becoming friends in the process.
